Trends We Avoid

Who doesn’t love trends? Being in style, up to date, and standing out. Some trends last a long time in the interior design industry, and others… not so much. With that being said, here are a few tends we try to steer away from. Disclaimer, if you like or have any of these styles currently in your home, don’t take our word for it! Enjoy your unique style and express yourself fully.

  1. All gold

Gold is pure luxury and can easily take your house from a 1 to a 100. It’s a beautiful accent to include in your interior design, although sometimes it can be a little TOO much. Here’s an example of kinda what I’m referring to. I love gold, don’t get me wrong, but every now and then, it can go WAY overboard. Instead of gold, try using brass elements or using more natural textures! Wood is another great thing to replace it, if it becomes too much. Wood is a classical and timeless element that can add to the beauty in any home.

2. Extreme farmhouse

We love farmhouse here at Heartland, but sometimes it can be a little much. It’s slowly making its way out of the un-southern states, but lets be honest, will it ever for us Okies? Back in 2018/2019 we were ALL obsessed with the whole grey/farmhouse trend. Including the windmills, oh the windmills. Not even mentioning how we would label everything, and I mean everything! However, some of those elements are still super trendy, things like light neutral paint colors, grey couches, and lots and lots of layers. Here’s an example of an extreme farmhouse living room.

3. Out of date colors

These colors sure had a hold on us around 2014-2015, I even remember weddings being based off these colors. We think that they were so cute in the past, but that’s probably where we should leave them… All the teal, neon pink, black and white chevron, and bright patterns that absolutely defined those years we now try and stay away from. We used to love them, but sadly, time has moved on. Instead, we try and use neutral colors with depths and organic textures.

4. Inspirational signs

I have to admit, I used to love these too. Sure, they’re usually great and heartwarming quotes, but let’s be honest, do we ever really read them and take them into consideration like we’re supposed to? These are definitely a trend we try and leave in the past, although they are a sweet and thoughtful element.

5. Tuscan style

Although it was definitely the hot topic at some point, we have thankfully moved way past it. It was so dark, gloomy, and brown. Kitchens today are more inspired to be light, earthy, and a designed well to cook.

6. Grey everything

Though grey is easy to match, a mid-tone color, and very customizable, we try and not use a lot of it. Too much can be dull, gloomy, and lifeless. It is our goal to encourage growth and life in every house we stage so, unfortunately, that excludes the all grey trend.
